Judgement vs forgiveness

I’m a member of a small group Bible study that meets each week.  We choose a different study and go for several weeks at a time.  Last year at this time we did a study based on the book 7.  Then we followed with a study about our spiritual SHAPE.  Now we’re studying “Dug Down Deep” by Joshua Harris.  I have really gotten into this book and God has really been challenging me about some of my behaviors through it.  Sounds fun, huh?

After reading our chapter for tonight’s study, God has pointed out that I’m pretty good at judging others.  I expect grace from them but don’t want to give it first.  I could try to justify it and tell you why I do that, but the bottom line is that it is WRONG – worse yet, it’s SINFUL.  So, the only way to make amends is to ask forgiveness.  I’m a work in progress.  I’m trying to be what it is that Christ is asking me to be.  Am I doing it perfectly?  Absolutely NOT!  Am I working on it?  Absolutely!  Several people came to mind that this morning on my commute to the town job.  People that I have judged based on others opinions, on the crowd they associate with, on whatever it is other than fact.  I’m am truly sorry and am trying to change my mindset.  I’m trying to remember that we’re all sinful humans just trying to make it in this messed up world.

I’ve not always been this way.  When I was younger and more naive I was much more trusting and less judgmental.  So when and why did I let the world change what Christ had begun in me?  Honestly, I got too many plates spinning and didn’t take the time to study God’s Word as I should have, didn’t pray about everything like I should have and didn’t really give people the time necessary to really get to know them before I made a judgement about them.  So that’s where some changes are coming.  Some of the plates don’t need to spin daily.  Some don’t need to spin at all.  But more forgiveness and less judging are two things that MUST happen in my life in order to keep bitterness and frustration at bay.  And that’s where I am.

What about you?  Is God speaking to you about an area to work on in your life?  What’re you going to do about it?

  1. Dear Friend,

I love my weekly bible study and I am so glad you have that too! I know it helps me stay in God’s Word and I pray it will continue to move both of us. it’s good you realize the habits and are working on changing the mindset. I am proud of you for writing this post. I too have recently pulled some of those plates and put them back in the cabinet. I’m thankful I did. May your journey continue on a grace filled path. I too struggle with sinful things and we are a work in progress like you said!
